Launched April 1, 2010, the new Canada Media Fund / Fonds des medias du Canada (CMF/FMC) website supports ‘television production as well as production for new media platforms, including games, webisodes, mobisodes, and websites, among others.’  In an effort to leverage the opportunities afforded by the Internet for business, communication, and collaboration, CMF/FMC sought to develop both internal and external corporate websites.  User in Mind (UIM) was hired by the CMF/FMC to develop the new Web presence that met the stated objectives, offered an expanded roster of services/features, and be ready to launch in conjunction with the new brand release.

The Intranet sought to deliver the following benefits to the organization:
  • Improve communication between users and provide distribution infrastructure for internal news and general updates
  • Centralize business information and knowledge
  • Support initial and ongoing training requirements within the organization or industry
  • Provide a safe and secure online community for staff both on and off site

To date, the chatter on Twitter and within the community has been a resounding thumbs up to the new site and its various features.

UIM and the Canadian Deposit Insurance Corporation (CDIC) partner to provide an enhanced elearning experience for member institutions online.

The CDIC (Canadian Deposit Insurance Corporation) engaged UIM to develop various elearning modules to be contained within their online environment. The elearning modules were directed to a professional audience and positioned as an optional training opportunity offered by the CDIC to the staff of its member institutions.  Therefore, presentation, flexibility and interactivity were paramount considerations in their creation. While the positioning of learning initiatives was critical to ensure harmony between the end result and overall communications, equally important was the articulation of business, user and technical objectives.  This information was more clearly defined as the consultation process progressed.

 Business Goals

  • Support Client member institutions through the provision of training tools for their staff
  • Raise the profile and understanding of Client amongst front-line staff to ensure that correct and appropriate messages are being relayed to customers
  • Offer an alternate mechanism for front-line staff to submit queries to the Client via the ‘Scenario Builder’ thereby increasing the dialogue while reducing potential volume of calls to Client call centre (Level 2 only)

 End User Goals

  • Provide a substantive and flexible learning experience that results in higher level of understanding
  • Employ simplicity in presentation with clear indicators for key points, as well as the opportunity to access additional information
  • Offer ability to create a customized reference sheet for ongoing use
  • Deliver modules in both official languages

 Technology Goals

  • Ensure modules are widely accessible by Client members
  • Allow users to create profiles in order to save their progress
  • Option to generate anonymous aggregate reports related to module usage, performance, etc.

UIM Launches Habitat for Humanity York Region Website

UIM has always been a fan of Habitat for Humanity, our work with them goes back many years to the early days of our company. We are pleased to have recently partnered with the York region affiliate to assist them in refreshing their web strategy through the development of their new Content Managed website. The site allows the affiliate to maintain the site on their own with little to no intervention from UIM. Although we love working with Not for Profits, we believe that it’s important to empower them to do as much as possible on their own to effectively manage their resources.

Habitat York Region joins other Habitat affiliates that we are working with, which includes, Halton Region, Waterloo and Toronto.
Habitat for Humanity York Region builds simple, decent and affordable homes in partnership with the community and with the families who will own them.  All homes are built almost completely by volunteers using building materials, land and money donated by individuals, businesses, and various community groups.

Families purchase their home from Habitat and make monthly payments on their no-interest mortgages over a period of 20 to 30 years.  In addition, families are required to complete a minimum of 500 hours of ‘sweat equity’ by volunteering to help build their own home, other Habitat homes or helping us in other ways.  The Habitat approach provides families with a hand up, not a hand out.

Habitat for Humanity York Region is an affiliate of Habitat Canada since 2001, with their first home dedicated in 2002. Since then Habitat York Region has dedicated a total of 9 homes in York Region and 3 homes International, and is currently engaged in its tenth project; the restoration and dedication of Historic Hawkins House in Markham, Ontario. To learn more about Habitat for Humanity York Region please visit the newly launched website at www.habitatyork.ca.
