Kelloggs and the DFC Kidzcount Contest Encourages Families to Ride
Written by UIM

Kellogg Canada, the leading manufacturer of nutritious, ready-to-eat cereals in Canada and Dairy Farmers of Canada, the national policy, lobby and promotional organization representing dairy farmers of Canada have (come/teamed-up together) on Kidz Count, a fun program designed to get families cycling towards a healthier, more active lifestyle. Children and their families will be able to count their cycling mileage using the free Kidz Count Cyclometres available in over 1.8 million specially marked boxes of Kellogg’s cereals and kick off the Kidz Count Cyclometre initiative.

Accompanying the Kidz Count (Cyclometre) challenge is an interactive, educational website located at www.kidzcount.ca. The website, created by UIM, allows children and their families to record their cycling mileage and compete against other families for a chance to win the Grand Prize of a family cycling trip to one of three trail destinations of their choice or one of two grand prizes for a Family set of Raleigh Bikes. The website also contains five virtual Canadian bike trails including The Canol Heritage Trail (Yukon) and the Gatineau Park Trail (Ontario)) to which competing families will be able to tour as they enter their cycling kilometers in the challenge. Children can enter alone (with parental permission), or as a family to reach their fitness goals and compete against each other for added motivation. For every 30 kilometres cycled, website registrants will earn a contest ballot for one of the three (grand prizes) described.

In addition to logging in, registering their kilometers traveled and entering ballots for the grand prizes, competing teams can also: enter their fitness goals; check out healthy active living tips when they visit the Active Zone; check out their trail report card to see how many ballots they have earned so far and; visit the Adult v.s. Kidz board to find out how the rest of Canada is doing. Educators can also make use of the Kidz Count website. Visit the Active Zone section for links to other sites that share lesson plans, activity sheets on healthy eating, active living and positive self-esteem, recipes, nutrition basics and much more.

Canada’s Physical Activity Guides for Children and Youth recommend spending at least 30 minutes or more per day being physically active. The goal is to increase activity gradually, until 90 minutes of physical activity daily. The Kellogg’s and Milk Cyclometres and the www.kidzcount.ca website will make it more fun for children and families to use their bicycle, reach these recommendations and encourage families to make a lifelong commitment to active, healthy living.
