The Council of Construction Associations (COCA) is the voice of the
construction industry in Ontario, working with the provincial government to
help the construction industry grow and prosper. One of their primary concerns
is the health and safety of workers in this industry. The following case study
outlines a project where User in Mind Internet Solutions was engaged to create
an online learning and survey tool for COCA, supported by the Workplace Safety
Insurance Board (WSIB).
Challenge
In September of 2004, COCA and WSIB stated a desire to promote the business
case for safety in the construction industry. They recognized the need to
educate businesses specifically on how addressing and improving health and
safety can lead to benefits that include increased shareholder value, improved
operations, and better bottom line results. COCA selected User in Mind to
develop and deliver a strategy that would communicate this message and change
the practices of certain construction companies, through an online learning and
survey tool.
Objectives
-
Reduce the frequency and severity of workplace incidents in the construction
industry
-
Make construction companies aware of the need for an benefits that can be
obtained
-
from safe and healthy working conditions
-
Create a cost-effective system for assessing and improving health and safety in
Ontario
-
Combine on- and off-line communications efforts for maximum reach
-
Ensure seamless integration with existing systems
-
Provide a framework for future expansion
Results
With open communication and a focus on the end-user, COCA and User in Mind
created an online learning and survey tool, building on the WSIB campaign on
the value of human life and the importance of safety in any workplace. The
interactive environment takes users through a confidential self-assessment
regarding the organization's current health and safety practices, directs them
to relevant learning modules, and presents a report identifying specific
actions the organization should now take. The integration of online learning
enhanced COCA's ability to help the construction industry prosper in the
following ways:
-
Facilitated communication between COCA and construction companies
-
Increased the number of member-organizations within COCA (?)
-
Created an interactive experience that presented meaningful content by
explaining and demonstrating the association's message, not simply stating it
-
Designed customized health and safety plans for each organization - identifying
the
-
current strengths and weakness in each - and ensuring the system is relevant to
all users
-
Encouraged companies to include a safer, healthier workplace in their long-term
strategy
-
Enabled the association to assess the effectiveness of its activities and
identify areas
-
of future development by analyzing reports produced from aggregate survey data
-
Raised awareness of COCA and it's mission within the target market
